2017 Optima PHEV Hybrid Technology

The 2017 Optima Plug-in’s estimated 600 mile driving range and increased efficiency levels are achieved by the combined efforts of a 2.0L “Nu” 4-cyclinder GDI engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, 50 kWh electric motor and 9.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The increased energy density of the battery pack has allowed engineers to reduce the size of the gas engine, making the Optima PHEV 20 percent more efficient than previous Kia eco-friendly models.

The hybrid technology of the PHEV also offers drivers three modes to utilize the Plug-in’s efficiency to its fullest. Drivers can choose either EV or HEV mode dependent on where they are driving and also a charging mode. EV mode is all electric and perfect for shorter city driving while HEV is more suited for highways.
